"Friendshipping" (10 years ago)
Friendshipping - the stage in a relationship where both parties are mutually interested in the other, and know of each others interest in each other, but no official dating relationship has begun yet.
This phase is what Thad and I were in from April 15th 2001 to August 26th. Although the intention was to still be just friends, the reality is that things are different when you know you are both interested in each other. We had just short of a month together before summer break and we spent literally every spare minute together! We had classes together, did homework together, worked the same shifts together, studied for finals together, and hung out together when we had free time. We had a lot of fun and it was during this time that I believe we really went from friends, to best friends.
We had agreed that we couldn't hold hands until we were officially dating, so we linked arms instead as we walked to class and such. I asked Thad if there was anything during this last month of school that really stood out to him. Neither of us had cars, so it wasn't like we had specific dates we could write about or remember. There was one thing though. Chaining daisies.
We sat in the grass outside the dorm and I taught him how to chain daisies. I think we spent several hours at it. We made all sorts of things out of the daisies as we sat and talked about our summer plans.
We both had a packed summer ahead. He was going back to Montana for about a month, then he would be on camp team, traveling from Christian camp to camp, spending a week or so at each one helping in whatever ministry they needed help in. I knew working in Christian camps was a passion of his and was glad for this opportunity for him, but I also knew that this meant limited communication over the summer. I would be going home to Eugene and working full time all summer to try to afford the next year of college. I don't know if I knew it at the time, but I would also be co-leading the youth group at my church for the summer. I remember as we got closer and closer to May 11th getting that oldies song stuck in my head a lot..."It's goona be a long, lonely summer."
