The Dream Giver
I haven't written in a while, but as I start to toy with the idea of moving away from facebook, I find myself toying with the idea of reactivating this old blog. I'm not sure what direction it will take. Perhaps an overview of things I am learning? Perhaps cute stories about the kids and every day life? Maybe an occasional allergy friendly recipe... I don't know.
For now, I am a firm believer in life long learning and mentorship. I strive to discipline my brain and my personal development daily with books I read, what I watch or listen to, Bible studies, and people I hang out with. I just finished reading the book "The Dream Giver" by Bruce Wilkinson, the author of "The Prayer of Jabez." I was surprised at how much I really enjoyed this book!
A short overview. "The Dream Giver" is about a "nobody" named "Ordinary" who lives in the land of "familiar." Every day, he wakes up and goes to the same job. When he gets home from work, he watches "the box." Then he goes to bed and starts the same familiar routine the next day. Sometimes, "Ordinary" will get together with "Best Friend" and they will watch "The Box" together. One day, "Ordinary" wakes up and realizes he has been paid a visit by the "Dream Giver." The first half of the book Chronically Ordinary's journey going from the land of familiar to the land of promise. Her pursues his new big dream, breaking out of his comfort zone, crossing rivers and deserts, fighting giants, and eventually arriving in the land of the "Anybodies." There, he discovers what his dream was as he ministers to them and helps them build their city.
The second half of the book goes back and explains the parable in more detail, showing how it applies to your life and your calling. Being that this is a Christian author, the "Dream Giver" represents God and the "Big Dream" represents God's plan for your life. This book dares to challenge us to think outside of our day to day familiar life and really analyze: Are we living out our Big Dream? Are we doing everything that God has called us to do? Or are we just taking up space. Do we have the guts to break out of our comfort zone and really make a difference?
If you haven't read it, I do recommend this book. It's an easy read. I have never been much of a reader and I read the whole book in about a week. Thad is a reader and read the whole thing in 1 night. I plan to go back through it again and read the parable to the kids. I think they would really enjoy the story portion.
Anyway, I don't know what direction this blog will go, but that was what was on my mind today.
