Country Kids

Thad is a farmer at heart. So, since we live in the Willamette Valley and it is harvest season, he has really enjoyed visiting the farms. The last two weeks, we went to the blueberry farm and in 2 sessions picked 24 lbs or organic blueberries! This week, we went to a different farm that had a variety of fresh produce. They had both a produce stand and u-pick available. We spend about an hour and a half with the kids picking blackberries and beans and then also bought some of the produce from the stand. The last two weeks Thad has lamented the fact that the kids are so cute out on the farm and we forgot the camera, so this week I remembered it.

Raquelle and Titus Berry eating ...I mean berry picking. These were thornless blackberries. I didn't know there was such a thing until I read their add on Craigs list! No pokes or scratches! Yeah!

This is what Titus looked like by the time we were ready to pack up. (We are in the bean section in this pic).
Thad, Marjorie and Raquelle picking beans.

And here is the loot from a little over an hour on the farm. Raquelle was very proud of all the stuff we got....either that or she just liked eating the berries!
By the way, all this fresh produce was only $7.60! The corn was 6 for $1, berries and beans were 25 cents a lb! If we can clear out some freezer space, maybe we'll go back again! We will definitely need to buy one of those chest freezers for the garage before next years harvest!

Speaking as a baker, it is so nice to have berries in the freezer. You can make yummy desserts all year! (Do berries grow year around in OR???)
