New Adventures!

Check out my kids butts! Aren't they cute!

Yes, those are cloth diapers you are seeing. We decided a while ago to make the change. We are making a gradual change though due to the start up cost. One of the ladies at our church has a baby the same age as Titus (1 day younger) and she uses cloth, so she was kind enough to let us borrow "samples" of several different types of diapers. We had been planning on going with the old prefolds (the type our parents probably used), but now after using these, we've changed our minds. It looks like we will most likely be going with pocket diapers. Why change to cloth? Well, I kept running into this article all over the web. If you click the link, check out the part about male infertility and disposable diapers! Also, Raquelle has had chronic yeast diaper rashes since she was about 6 months old. She gets one at least once a month, they are incredibly painful for her, and usually take 3 to 5 days to clear up. It was suggested to us that cloth diapers could make this problem go away. So, no, our reason isn't cost, it isn't the environment, or anything like that. We feel that cloth diapers are healthier for our children. The only draw back is the start up cost. The pocket diapers that Thad likes so much are $15 to $20 EACH! I put the kids in Fitted diapers this morning, they are about $10 each...but they were much harder to get onto a wiggly Titus. We are considering ordering prefolds (about $3 each) and then ordering the pocket diapers 1 at a time and then making the prefolds into inserts for the pocket diapers. I think that's our plan for now. Don't worry though. If you babysit for us, we are still going to keep some disposable diapers on hand for convenience and for when we are out in public (church, etc). It is definitely an adventure trying to get the hang of cloth. Another reason to go with pocket diapers is they are velcro or snaps and go on in one piece like a disposable diaper. That means Thad is more likely to keep helping change diapers. Also, that means I don't have to worry about pinning the kids if they wiggle too much. Anyway...that's all for now. I'm working on making some pocket diapers. I have the first 2 and their inserts cut out and ready to sew. I'll post pictures when they are done. If they work well, I may end up making half our stash. The ones I'm making will need diaper covers though...since I'm making them out of old T-shirts that we have lying around the house!

Edited: Here are some pics of Titus wearing a Bum Genius One Size diaper. This is the type / brand that Thad wants to go with. It goes on in one piece, is Velcro, and does not need a cover. There is a soaker pad that stuffs inside it and unstuffs to wash so it doesn't take forever to dry. Now that I've put it on him though, Titus will go completely into size 18 month pants in these diapers. Aren't they cute though?

That child is way to cute for his own good. Oh, and the diapers look nice too.

Goggle the snappi diaper fastener. It's made my life with prefolds happy-look ma, no pins! You can get good used pockets for much cheaper at diaperswappers.com and diapertraders.com where moms trade diapers and other things for a lot cheaper than retail. Your babies look adorable in their cloth nappies.
